The most widely used water disinfection methods include ultrafiltration (UF), UV irradiation, and ozonation, while reverse osmosis (RO) also leads to disinfection. The high energy consumption of RO makes it unsuitable as a disinfection technology alone. Furthermore, RO leads to removal of essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Thus, in cases where desalination or removal of pollutants is not required, the use of RO should be completely avoided.
UV deactivates microorganisms, but when the water is stored or transported after UV treatment, microorganisms regrow and re-contaminate the water. Thus, UV-treated water should be consumed directly after treatment, and cannot be stored safely for more than one day.
